U.S.S. Pictor (AF-54)

The Final Years of the Pictor

From 1982 thru most of 1986 the USS Pictor (AF 54) was owned by Levin Metals Corporation where it was berthed alongside the south side of Finger Pier 1 at Richmond, California, coordinates +37° 54' 18.96", -122° 22' 15.14" (37.905267, -122.370872), along with the USS Procyon (AF 61) and USS Zelima (AF 49). The Pictor was sold to Shiong Yek Steel Corporation, a Republic of China corporation, on September 29, 1986, along with the Procyon and Zelima. Jacq. Pierot Jr. & Sons, Inc. of New York City was appointed Resident Agent on behalf of Shiong Yek Steel Corporation on October 3, 1986. They arranged the tow of the Pictor, Procyon, and Zelima from Finger Pier 1 to Taiwan. All three vessels were towed to Kaohsiung, Taiwan where they were scrapped at Tajenkung Pier. In an affidavit dated January 7, 1995 from H.C. Chen, Chairman of Shiong Yek Steel Corporation, to the U.S. Maritime Administration, Mr. Chen stated: "...breaking commenced December 2, 1986 and was completed on 16 June 1987."
